Parallel unstructured grid computations require the combination of several software components: geometry representation, grid generation/manipulation, discretization/error estimation, nonlinear/linear solvers, visualization, load balancing and dynamic distributed data structure support.
In a parallel environment all of these tools have to be integrated into a single piece of software in order to avoid sequential bottlenecks. The complexity of the resulting code is so high that good software design, code reuse and teamwork are mandatory. The talk reviews the concepts behind the software package UG and concentrates on some of the algorithmic ideas that have been used in the implementation of the components listed above.
This talk reports on joint work with K. Birken, K. Johannsen, S. Lang, N. Neuß, H. Rentz--Reichert and C. Wieners.
